United Personnel's Tricia Canavan Named Chamber Citizen of the Year

May 18, 2017

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 15, 2017   The Springfield Regional Chamber has named Tricia Canavan, President/Owner of United Personnel as its 2017 Richard J. Moriarty Citizen of the Year. The award is given annually to honor the memory of Richard J. Moriarty, a long-time active participant in the Chamber and individual who gave of his time, talent and personal and professional resources to the local community.

“In 2007, the Springfield Regional Chamber wanted to honor the legacy of longtime Chamber board member Rick Moriarty, and so the Chamber created the Richard J. Moriarty Citizen of the Year Award,” said Chamber President Nancy Creed.

“Since then, the award has been given to someone in the business community who - like Tricia - selflessly gives of their time, talent and personal and professional resources to the community and encourages those who work with them and for them to do the same,” Creed added.

Canavan manages daily operations, strategic planning, marketing and community engagement initiatives for United Personnel’s Massachusetts and Connecticut locations. United Personnel has received numerous awards including the Commonwealth Institute/Boston Globe Magazine Top 100 Woman-Led Businesses in MA; several Chamber of Commerce awards, including Small Business of the Year and has been consistently named one of Springfield Regional Chamber’s Super 60 Award winners.

Previously Canavan served as the Executive Director of the Springfield Public Forum, one of the nation’s longest-running public lecture series. In addition to non-profit management, Canavan has held various human resources and education positions throughout her career, including serving as Director of Human resources at Signature Dublin, Ohio and as a faculty member at Berkshire Community College.

Canavan is a member of several Boards of Directors, including Associated Industries of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts State Workforce Development Board, the Economic Development Council of Western Mass, Baystate Health Foundation, the Springfield Regional Chamber, the Holyoke Chamber Foundation, and the Springfield Public Forum. She also serves as co-chair of Springfield Business Leaders for Education and represents United Personnel as a Core Partner in Springfield’s Working Cities Initiative, which recently received a Federal Reserve grant focusing on workforce development innovation.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in American History and Culture from Trinity College. Canavan will be honored at the Chamber Business@Breakfast on June 7, 2017 from 7:15-9:00 a.m. at the Flynn Campus Union at Springfield College, 263 Alden Street, Springfield, sponsored by presenting sponsor MGM Springfield, breakfast series sponsor United Personnel and coffee bar sponsor Duro-Last Roofing

In addition to honoring Canavan, the breakfast will feature keynote speaker, Trinity College Men’s Squash Coach and author Paul Assaiante, as well as highlights of the Chamber’s successes over the past year and will double as its annual meeting and include elections of its board of directors.

Reservations for the breakfast are $20 for members in advance, ($25 at the door) and $30 for general admission ($35 at the door). Reservations may be made online at or by contacting Jessica Hill at
