Business Community Supports State Relief For City of Springfield

June 16, 2004

The 1800 businesses represented by the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield, Inc. support Mayor Ryan's efforts to address the fiscal crisis facing the city of Springfield and applaud his administration's efforts to reach out to the business community for expertise in making Springfield's government run more efficiently. The Chamber has been pleased to play a crucial role in administering the Loaned Executive Program by providing business people skilled in areas of need. Additionally, the Chamber shares Mayor Ryan’s administration's commitment to resolving this crisis permanently, not with a one-time fix that will require the city to revisit this issue annually. Businesses considering relocating or starting up in the Greater Springfield area need to know that the city's financial house is in order and that their business can grow in a secure environment.

The Chamber strongly encourages all parties, including the City, the Romney administration and the Legislature, to work cooperatively and expeditiously in devising and implementing immediate long-term and sustainable relief.

"The business community recognizes that this is not just a Springfield issue," says Russell F. Denver, President, Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield, Inc., "we know that what happens in Springfield directly impacts the greater Pioneer Valley region." Denver adds, "The fiscal stability of the city of Springfield is absolutely critical to the entire region's ability to sustain and improve upon the existing business climate and attract new business opportunities. The Chamber stands ready to assist any and all parties as a solution is designed and implemented."

The Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield, Inc. serves seven area affiliated chambers, a woman's partnership and the businesses they represent to meet individual and collective goals promoting prosperity for the region. The Chamber serves Agawam, East Longmeadow, Longmeadow, Hampden, Wilbraham, Ludlow, Springfield, West Springfield, and Westfield.
